For a master project commissioned by Zweva Environment, together with a multi-disciplinary team, we designed and prototyped the ultimate underground beach bin. We created a parametric model to calculate the required amount of bins for a specific case: Scheveningen beach in summer. This calculation showed us that an effective way of reducing waste on the beach would be to place extra bins closer to the sea. A major challenge was how to securely install underground bins near the sea with high groundwater levels. We designed a screw concept which secures the bin into the sand, and validated it with (scale) models and groundwater tests.
